Okay, maybe I make Donny look like the daily news by comparison. What *have* I been doing with myself for the last, oh, 11 months or so? First off, I did indeed finish my undergrad degree, and have gone on to do my Master's at the U of W. I've taken three grad courses, TA'd three courses, and now just have a "thesis" thing to write and I'm all done; how hard can a *thesis* be, right? right? Okay, so maybe I have a bit more work ahead of me... sigh. In related news, I'm heading off to California later this week to present a paper I wrote last summer/fall, so that's pretty exciting (and also warm!) As for my next post? Well, I'm hoping to post something soon that isn't a desperate attempt to fill people in on my life in yearly installments, but after that, who knows... I might be working on a PhD, out in the "real world" (aaaah!) or still working on the "Big T(hesis)". It all depends on how quickly I write my thesis (and how frequently I post to this blog, of course). Only time will tell...

Various Doin's A Transpirin'

I know I haven't posted in a while, but I figured I'd wait until something really memorable came along and now several have hit me at once. So, in no particular order:

* I finally made it through my undergrad degree in CS, which means that after many years of waiting, I can open bags of peanuts. Well, I went to the Grebel convocation a little while ago and they seemed to think I was graduating... Hopefully I'll get a diploma in the mail sometime soon which will confirm my status as a peanut bag opener.

* I went to my first academic conference last weekend on "e-health". What is e-health? Why was I going? What did I learn? I'm not sure, but I got this really cool bag out of the deal, so it was all worth it.

* I have a job for the summer doing research for people at Needless Hell. Yes, that's right -- I did my very best to avoid stepping foot in the building during five years of a co-op degree, and now that I'm done I get thrown right back in there. Ah well; the job looks interesting (creating a call-for-proposals distribution system for the Office of Research) and the hours are flexible (whenever I feel like it), so I can't complain. Now if I can just get a straight answer from someone on this whole "salary" thing...

* Speaking of karmic revenge, it seems that for my masters degree (which I'll be starting in the fall at the U of W) I will be designing and implementing a statistical toolkit for a web-based data management system used for developing high school anti-smoking programs. I'm happy about it because I'm working on a worthwhile project with some good people, but on the other hand, I'll be using STATS! <shudder>

That's about all from my world... hopefully I'll post again sometime in the next eight months or so.

Worlds Collide, Jerry! Worlds Collide!

Well, I created this blog mainly out of a desire to post to Joel's blog rather than any desire to actually post to this blog, but I remember telling myself that if something happened to me that was really interesting, bizarre, or just generally blog-worthy, that I would post it.
Several months have gone by, and something "blog-worthy" has finally happened to me. I didn't discover a new planet, graduate from U of W, or prove P=NP, but it was still pretty random and cool all the same.
I went to the World Religions Conference on Saturday, and spent most of my time there staffing a booth for Voices: Across Boundaries, a multi-faith current issues magazine that my dad edits. Being an inter-religious conference and all, I wasn't terribly surprised to see many people from a variety of different faiths milling about the booth, and was pleasantly surprised to run into people I knew from both Grebel and my synagogue. However, what truly stunned and shocked me, though, was when I received a visit from none other than Bill, the bartender at Kickoff's! After some surprisingly friendly conversation with the usually surly barkeep, he wandered off to peruse the other booths at the conference, but it lent a surreal twist to the day.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://davechodos.blogspot.com/2004/10/worlds-collide-jerry-worlds-collide.html' title='Worlds Collide, Jerry! Having smelled my desire to post to Joel's blog, it darted in for a quick meal, and before I knew what was happening I'd created my own blog and was posting to it in a mad frenzy of... well, I guess that pretty much brings me to right now, actually :) I don't quite know what'll go on this thing yet, but I'm sure it will be a great waster of perfectly good energy that might otherwise have gone towards "productive" activities like curing cancer, acheiving world peace, and reading other people's blogs... uh oh, did I say that last one out loud, or just think it? I'd better come up with a lie, quick! Ah well, this blog has sucked away too much of my precious cancer-curing time already... tune in next time, same blog time, same blog channel!
